Newcastle electronic duo NOVYI LEF return with their new single ‘Part Of The Bigger Thing’.
Announcing its arrival with a roar of motorway traffic, ‘Part Of The Bigger Thing’ showcases the band’s signature pounding drums, thumping rhythmic bass and analogue synth screams. Recorded remotely over lockdown in separate makeshift home studios, the single is the band’s first new material since their debut EP ‘Ethic Or Aesthetic’, and is the first material released from these new recording sessions.

Speaking on the single, the band said: ‘Part Of The Bigger Thing looks at the unkept promises of Newcastle’s 1960’s rebuilding, asking - where has this vision for the future of our region gone now? It contrasts the utopian promise held by the building of a new motorway - embodied in the planning text spoken during the song’s breakdown - and the contemporary dystopian landscape that this has created. Musically, we wanted to create something minimal, using a driving bass to push the song forward with the same momentum as a car hurtling down the Central Motorway. We were partly inspired by Kraftwerk’s Autobahn, and wanted to see what a song written about a motorway in Newcastle, rather than Germany, would sound like.
Since our EP released in 2018, we’ve both been busy with other musical projects, studying and jobs - we’ve continued to write and perform but never had a chance to record this material until lockdown gave us the opportunity. We’re really excited for this single to finally be out there, and can’t wait to show you what else we have been up to.’

Formed in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, NOVYI LEF is the creative output of Euan Lynn (lead vocals, synthesisers, programming) and Tom Reah (synthesisers, programming). Inspired by a shared love of the post-punk synth sounds of bands like The Normal, New Order, Le Tigre and LCD Soundsystem, they set out to marry this sound with a keen political edge.

NOVYI LEF have shared the stage with bands such as Twist Helix, Boy Harsher, The Ninth Wave and AK/DK, and have performed at festivals such as Evolution Emerging and Northern Electric Festival. Tracks from their previous release, ‘Ethic Or Aesthetic’, received local radio play on BBC Radio Tees, and internationally on Maker Park Radio NYC.

With a series of live shows put on hold due to the ongoing situation, NOVYI LEF have instead increased their writing and recording, adapting to the situation without missing a beat. While we all anxiously await the return of live music, the band continue to write and record, with a series of releases planned for 2021.
